Allgemeine Angaben

Introduction

CMC Markets is an old, reputed, and established name among forex brokerages in the UK. The company was founded in 1989 by Peter Cruddas under the Currency Management Corporation. Later in 2005, the company was rebranded to CMC Markets in 2005.

In the old days, CMC Markets used to offer telephone-based forex dealing services to institutional clients like banks and hedge funds. In 1996, the broker claims to have executed the first online FX trade using the company’s proprietary MarketMaker software.

Fast forward to today, the company is a major name in CFD trading and online asset investing space offering services globally. With a history of 30+ years and licences from major regulators around the world like FCA, CMC Markets continues to be a trusted name for many traders.

Supported Countries

Before selecting a broker, always check if the company offers services in your country or not. Many users sign up without verifying if the broker is available in their region and often get stuck. To help you trade with only the brokers available in your country, we always aim to ensure you only see the brokers available in your country.

CMC Markets operates offers services in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, and many more across Europe, Asia, and Middle East

However, due to regulatory requirements, the broker may not accept clients from certain jurisdictions like the United States, China, and Indonesia. The company has not shared a comprehensive list of their restricted regions on the website. But according to our research, we have found the broker does not offer services in Belgium, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, South Africa, Ukraine, Belarus, Iran, and Yemen.

A quick way to check a broker’s availability in your country is by heading straight to their sign-up page. If you can proceed without trouble, it means the broker accepts clients from your country. Otherwise, you cannot complete the sign-up process.  The sign-up process does not take more than 2 minutes from start to finish.

Average Customer Rating

Trust plays an important role when you are choosing a broker. Make sure the broker you pick has an impeccable track record and mostly positive feedback. The easiest way to do this is by looking at a company’s customer reviews.

At the time of writing this article, CMC Markets generally maintains a strong rating of 4.3 stars on Trustpilot with approximately 3000 reviews. If you are an existing CMC Markets user, we urge you to share your experience on your customer reviews section. Other traders can get valuable insights, and it will be a service to the trading community that visits our website regularly.

Trading Platforms

The charting features, automated trading strategies, and many advanced features depend on the trading platform a broker offers. A good trading platform can make your life easier, whereas a bad one will only add to your troubles.

CMC Markets offers access to multiple industry-leading trading platforms. The company also has its proprietary trading platform named Next Generation.

Company’s Proprietary Trading Platform

The company’s proprietary award-winning Next Generation platform offers advanced charting capabilities, technical indicators, and risk-management tools. Traders can access this platform directly through their web browser without installing additional software.

The platform is also available on mobile apps for both Android and iOS. With these apps, you can track the markets, place trades, and manage your positions anytime, anywhere.

MetaTrader (MT4 and MT5)

For legacy traders who have had more experience using MetaTrader variants, the broker also supports MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. These platforms remain some of the most widely used platforms in the forex and CFD trading communities. However, the availability of the platform varies from region to region. MT5 however, may not be available in all regions.

TradingView

TradingView is an advanced trading platform that offers real-time data, customisable charts, and technical analysis tools. CMC Markets supports TradingView, but to trade with the broker through TradingView, you’ll need to have both: A CMC Markets live account and a TradingView account before you can connect the two.

Leverage and Spreads

Think of Leverage as a multiplier that allows you to control bigger positions against your investments. Where leverage gives you a higher upside potential for profitable trades, the losses are also multiplied on loss-making trades. The maximum leverage available to traders using CMC Markets depends on the regulatory jurisdiction under which the account is registered. For example, under FCA, BaFin, and other tier-1 regulators, the leverage is usually capped at 1:30 for major forex pairs due to regulatory guidelines.

With offshore regulated brokers, the company can offer a much higher leverage of 1:500. However, offshore regulators lack security features like negative balance protection and investor protection funds.

A spread is a difference between the buying and selling price of a financial asset. You can think of it as a fee your broker charges every time you execute a trade. So, the lower the spreads, the better it is. CMC Markets offers very low spreads starting from 0.5 pips on EUR/USD pairs.

Tradable CFD Assets and Long-Term Investment Assets

The tradable asset range from CMC Markets is multiple times bigger than many brokers. The company offers around 12,000 CFD assets and around 5,000 investable assets. You can find the details of the asset classes and numbers or instruments in the tables below:

Customer Support and Knowledge Hub

Customer support plays an important role in the overall trading experience, especially on days when you run into issues or simply need answers to your queries. CMC Markets offers multichannel and multilingual support available on all trading days (Monday to Friday).

The company provides customer support in Turkish, Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, Arabic, Bengali, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese in addition to English.

For those looking to find answers on their own, the company has a detailed FAQs section. The Learn Hub is the company’s version of a knowledge base where new and pro traders can find a lot of valuable articles covering different trading topics. Lastly, to help you stay on top of global events that impact markets, there is a News and Analysis section on the website.

Deposits and Withdrawals

Traders have to make deposits and withdrawals all the time. Therefore, the availability of convenient payment methods is an important factor when choosing a broker. CMC Markets accepts multiple payment methods, primarily bank transfers, credit/debit cards (Visa and Mastercard), and PayPal.

Withdrawals are generally processed through the same payment method used for deposits, although processing times can vary depending on the banking system or payment provider.

The account currencies can be set to USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, NZD, SGD, CAD, and HKD. Most brokers usually only offer USD as the base account currency.

Company Details

CMC Markets is a brokerage with 35+ years of track record of offering trading services. The company is headquartered in London, UK, but also has offices in Canada, UAE, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Poland, and Bermuda.

The company has unique feats like a claim to execute the first online trade in 1996. Originally operated under the name Currency Management Corporation and began as a foreign exchange broker serving institutional traders.

Over the years, the company expanded its services to CFD trading space. The company now offers forex, shares, indices, commodities, bonds, cryptocurrencies, and ETFs to traders around the world. At the time of writing this article, the company boasts 2M+ traders on the platform.

In 2016, CMC Markets was listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CMCX, reflecting its growth and position in the global online trading industry.

Today, the brokerage operates internationally with licences from multiple reputable regulators.

Regulation and Compliance

Before opening an account with any broker, it’s important to understand who regulates the platform. Weak regulators lack strict regulatory oversight, which can potentially lead to poor standards of operations.

Tier-1 regulators on the other hand require multiple audits (client money audit and annual financial audits), regulatory reporting, and ad hoc supervisory reviews. Also, tier-1 regulators offer security features like negative balance protection, segregated client funds, and investor protection funds.

CMC Markets operates under the licences from multiple reputable regulatory authorities across different regions. These regulatory licences are as follows:

Regulation Company Entity License Number
FCA (UK) CMC Markets UK plc 173730
FCA (UK) CMC Spreadbet plc 170627
ASIC (UK) CMC Markets Asia Pacific Pty Ltd 238054
BaFin (Germany) CMC Markets Germany GmbH 154814
MAS (Singapore) CMC Markets Singapore Pte Ltd 200605050E
FMA (New Zealand) CMC Markets NZ Limited FSP41187
DFSA (UAE) CMC Markets Middle East Limited F002740
BMA Bermuda CMC Markets Bermuda Limited 202302718

Like many regulated brokers, CMC Markets requires Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance.

Conclusion

Overall, CMC Markets is a great broker with 35+ years in the trading space. The broker offers access to thousands of financial instruments, advanced trading platforms, and has multiple regulatory licences from tier-1 regulators.

The company’s Next Generation platform, MetaTrader 4 & 5, and TradingView cater to different types of traders. Competitive spreads lower the trading overhead. Transparent trading fees and no minimum deposit requirement make it a great option for new traders. Professional traders can benefit from advanced trading strategies and higher leverage on some account types.

In CMC Markets, it is a great fit for many types of traders. To test the broker risk-free, you can create a free demo account.
